Fellow Prisoners

This evening I was challenged by the reality of persecution. This verse came to mind: “Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” Hebrews 13:3 NIV

That left me to ask, “What if?”

What if you had just one request that you could make if you found yourself…

– being tortured for your faith?
– working to pay off an ever increasing debt to an unfair lender?
– forced to sell your body for money?
– abandoned on the streets?
– watching your father and mother separate and the marriage crumble?
– begging for food?
– beaten up by other kids at school?
– being abused by a family member or relative?
– despairing of life because you haven’t heard the good news about Jesus?

The truth is, we are to live as if this were us, only we are the ones to run the rescue. Would you answer your own request if you had the power?

It makes me think more seriously about how badly I (and we as the western church?) mismanage my resources, when they could be channeled to make more of an impact on the world around me.

So help me God.

Getting Ready for the Next Step

I wonder sometimes if we’re confused about the details of God’s will because we haven’t figured out its generalities.

For example, we men are called to leadership. Until I recognize that, why should I expect God to reveal a place in which to lead? God put me here for a reason.

For example, if you’re looking for direction, here may be good places to start:

* In the places where God has placed yourself under authority, make sure you’re on board in honoring and respecting your authority.

* In the places where God has placed you in authority, lead out.

Of course, maybe there are other things God wants to teach you that He’s waiting on for the next step. Maybe He wants you to learn how to love God, or maybe your neighbor.

My opinion? You will get your specific calling as you work out the general things of the will of God In your current situation.

Trouble to Testimony

“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

-Psalm 50:14-15, ESV

No matter how much we wish it would be different, life isn’t meant to be trouble-free. Trouble is God’s way of building a testimony. He puts you into a situation that is bigger than yourself, you cry out, and He delivers you. Then He does it again. If you find yourself in the day of trouble, remember that your troubles may have nothing to do with you and everything to do with a God that is longing to show Himself strong!
